Understanding Hoovering: How Narcissists Pull You Back In

Tammy Adcock
Jul 06, 2024By Tammy Adcock

What is Hoovering?

Hoovering is a tactic used by narcissists to pull you back into their orbit. Named after the vacuum cleaner brand, it describes how they "suck" you back into a relationship or situation. This behavior often appears after you have tried to distance yourself or break free.

Narcissists use hoovering to regain control and keep you emotionally engaged. They may employ various methods to achieve this, ranging from sweet talk to guilt-tripping. Understanding these tactics can help you recognize and resist them.

narcissist behavior

use:

  • Love Bombing: Showering you with affection and attention to make you feel special.
  • Guilt Trips: Making you feel responsible for their well-being.
  • Promises of Change: Vowing to improve their behavior to lure you back.
  • Playing the Victim: Acting helpless or hurt to gain your sympathy.

These tactics can be very effective, especially if you still have feelings for the person. Recognizing them is the first step in protecting yourself.

emotional manipulation

Another reason is to avoid the feeling of abandonment. Narcissists often have deep-seated fears of being left alone. Hoovering helps them avoid facing these fears by keeping you close.

How to Protect Yourself

Protecting yourself from hoovering requires awareness and boundaries. Here are some tips:

  1. Set Clear Boundaries: Define what behavior is acceptable and stick to it.
  2. Limit Contact: Reduce or eliminate communication with the narcissist.
  3. Seek Support: Talk to friends, family, or a coach for guidance and support.

By taking these steps, you can maintain your emotional health and avoid falling back into a toxic relationship.

personal boundaries

Remember, you deserve healthy and respectful relationships. Don't let hoovering pull you back into a harmful situation. Stay informed and stay empowered.
